Introduction of 'Neutral zone position control type pressure differential system'

I would like to briefly introduce the 'Neutral zone position control type Pressure differential system(PDS)', which has the same functions as the existing fan air supply/exhaust pressure differential systems, but can be implemented at low cost. Please take a look at the information below and, if possible, I would like to hear your opinion.

1. Overview

This smoke control system is a neutral zone position control type smoke control system that can effectively prevent the spread of smoke to other floors due to the stack effect at low cost without applying the air supply and exhaust by fans. As of October 12, 2023, the application has been filed in Korea and the patent registration examination is in progress.

2. Problems with existing smoke control systems

Most conventional PDS use a smoke control method by supplying pressurization of outdoor air or depressurizing the discharge of smoke using fans. The investment cost per square meter for this PDS through fan supply/exhaust is very high compared to other systems(sprinkler fire extinguishing system, fire alarm system, etc.). The investment cost is known to be approximately 2 to 7 $/m^2 for sprinkler systems, approximately 1 to 3 $/m^2 for fire alarm systems, and approximately 10 to 30 $/m^2 for PDS. Although a detailed analysis has not yet been conducted, the cost of applying my new type is expected to be lower than the cost of 'fire alarm system'.

3. Solution

Method 1: Instead of applying the fan supply and exhaust method to the building, relatively large dampers are installed at the top and bottom of the building, and the position of the neutral zone is adjusted by adjusting the opening area to control the pressure at the vertical shaft at the same height as the fire floor. It is about a smoke control system that ensures this positive(+) pressure.

Method 2: The currently popular PDS applies the concept that all floors must be pressurized for one vertical shaft and/or its vestibules. However, this concept appears to be causing the cost of smoke control systems to be higher than that of other systems. Therefore, this patent applies the method of pressurizing the vestibules or corridors connected to all vertical shafts in the building only for the fire floor and one upper and lower floor. However, construction measures must be taken to ensure that the spread of smoke to other floors through the floor in areas excluding vertical shafts is minimal.

Method 3: Apply the above Method 1 and/or Method 2 independently or together, considering the characteristics of the building and the occupants.

4. Effect

a. The PDS by neutral zone position control can be implemented at a lower cost than that by supply/exhuast volume flow rate control.

b. By monitoring the status of the neutral zone location of a fire building, a fire suppression strategy can be effectively established by reasonably identifying the appropriateness of the entry location through the firefighter's entry window or door and the appropriateness of the firefighter's entry time.
